Poison Pole – Youth Ministry version

Rules:

Every player holds hands in a circle around an up turned bin. Players push and pull other players in the attempt to push them into the bin without breaking hands.

If a player touches the bin they are out. If two players let go of hands they are both out. When someone is out, pause the game, regroup the circle then start again.

Last person standing wins!

Number of Players: 6 to 30 (can use two circles)

Number of Leaders: 1

Duration: 10 minutes

Equipment: – A bin

What is required is some sort of “pole”, it can be ideally a mattress or something soft rolled up, a stack of chairs, a plastic bin or something else.

The way the game works is that all the youth join hands (monkey wrist grip suggested) and make a big circle. If someone touches the pole they are out or if 2 players break the link (lets go) then both are out.

What makes this game fun is having a large group of kids pulling each others hands, trying to make the others touch the pole while also thinking about not pulling to hard that they let go of their link in the chain,

Once the game gets down to a few players, 3 or 2, it doesn’t change but the rounds are over very quickly. One player pulls the other straight into the pole and the winner is found.

This is a game of strength and technique, I found this game fun as a kid because I could think about my grip and how to hold on. “should we use monkey grip? or just hold hands normally?” Kids, especially boys, enjoy having the challenge of physically overcoming their friends as well as trying to outsmart them.

An extra addition to the game is the idea of a “moving pole”. We used a rolled up mattress at my youth group as the pole, then we cut arm holes in the mattress and used it as a homemade sumo suit. A leader wore the mattress and would slowly walk around making the game more challenging. This was also a good way to get the kid who always wins out so another player can have a go winning.

I hope u guys enjoy this game,

Catch you next time.
